Main Courthouse:

The court house is located at 400 W. State St. Currently, there is a temporary entrance at 403 Elm Street. The courthouse takes up the block between State St., Church St., Elm St., and Winnebago St.

Criminal Justice Center:

The trial you are put on may be in this building, not the main courthouse. You will travel about 2 blocks in an underground tunnel. This building is located at 650 W. State St. This building is in the block that is surrounded by State St., Winnebago St., and Chestnut St. There is free parking at this location, but there are limited spaces.

 Security:

  • All visitors must go through security when entering the courthouse.
  • No smoke breaks are allowed until a designated meal break.
  • Leave any items that could be considered weapons at home. This includes pocketknives, even if they’re left over from a recent fishing or camping trip.
  • Metal items (belts, jewelry, etc.) must be removed before passing through the metal detector.
  • Bags will be x-rayed.
  • If bringing food, wear your juror sticker (found on your summons) and security will allow you to bring in snacks or lunch.

 

Getting to the Jury Assembly Room:

  • After clearing security, proceed down the main hallway.
  • At the end of the hall, turn right and then a left at the end of that hallway to reach the elevators.
  • Take the elevator to the 5th floor, or if you prefer stairs, they are located just past the elevators.
  • Exit the elevator and go through the propped-open door on the left (Suite 502).
  • Present your jury summons at the counter.

This is your waiting area before being called to a courtroom. The judge and attorneys may still be finalizing details.

  • Tables, books, TV, games, crosswords, sudoku, and even postcards
  • Wi-Fi access and outlets for electronic devices
  • Vending machines and water available
  • Microwave available on the Lower Level (LL)
  • Note: No refrigerator is available at this time
What You Can Bring:
  • Personal electronics (phones, tablets, e-readers)
  • Books, crafts, puzzles, and other quiet activities
  • Snacks and meals (please be mindful of odors)
Important Rules:
  • Recording or phone calls are not permitted.
    This is to maintain the privacy and anonymity of all potential jurors.

When it’s time, a bailiff will escort you to the courtroom.

Courtroom Locations:

  • 3rd or 4th Floor: You will walk down one or two flights of stairs.
  • CJC (Criminal Justice Center): You will take the elevator to the Lower Level (LL) and then walk about 2 blocks through an underground tunnel.

If you are physically unable to navigate stairs or the tunnel, notify the Jury Commission that day — accommodations can be arranged.

 

Jury Rooms:

  • A private room is available for deliberations and for breaks when the judge meets privately with attorneys.
  • You may store personal belongings in this room securely.

 

Dress:

Courthouse temperatures can vary, with some areas warmer or cooler than others. To stay comfortable throughout the day, dressing in layers is recommended.

Please wear courtroom-appropriate attire—something that reflects the seriousness and formality of court proceedings while also allowing for comfort during potentially long hours.
