17th Circuit Court to Celebrate Law Day on May 1, 2018

The Seventeenth Judicial Circuit Court will celebrate Law Day on Tuesday, May 1, 2018 from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. with an Information Fair in the Atrium of Stewart Square, located at 308 West State Street in Rockford.  At this free event court staff, along with area organizations, will volunteer their time to provide information to visitors regarding the court’s history, the legal system, and this year’s national Law Day theme, Separation of Powers.

This year’s event will feature live demonstrations throughout the day by Official Court Reporters and by teams from the Seventeenth Judicial Circuit Court Volunteer Therapy Dog Program. There will also be a demonstration by the Rockford Police Department’s K-9 Unit at 12:00 p.m.

Law Day, held annually on May 1, is a national day set aside to celebrate the rule of law. Law Day underscores how law and the legal process contribute to the freedoms that all Americans share. Law Day also provides an opportunity to recognize the role of courts in democracy and the importance of jury service to maintaining the integrity of the courts.

Organizations involved in the Information Fair are Illinois JusticeCorps, Prairie State Legal Services, Rockford Police Department, Winnebago County Bar Foundation, Winnebago County CASA Program, Northern Illinois University’s Zeke Giorgi Legal Clinic, and various departments of the Seventeenth Judicial Circuit Court including Court Reporting Services, Jury Commission, Law Library & Self Help Center, Foreclosure Mediation Program, and the Office of the Chief Judge.
