Judge Clifford Selected as Chair of the 17th Circuit FVCC Print E-mail

Associate Judge Jennifer J. Clifford has been named the new chair of the Seventeenth Judicial Circuit Family Violence Coordinating Council.  Created in 1994, the Council works to improve institutional and community responses to family violence through prevention, training, and awareness. The FVCC is comprised of professionals from a variety of disciplines including judges, law enforcement, victim advocates, medical professionals, and civil legal services. In addition to annual public awareness events such as Hands Around the Courthouse and Shining the Light on Domestic Violence, the FVCC provides training on topics related to domestic and sexual violence, child abuse, elder abuse, and human trafficking.

Eugene G. Doherty, Chief Judge of the Seventeenth Judicial Circuit Court, announced Clifford’s appointment to replace the outgoing chair, retired Judge Rosemary Collins.  Judge Doherty said that the Council’s existence and success are due in great part to the efforts of Judge Collins:  “The clearest and most consistent voice in our community on the issue of domestic violence for decades has been Rose Collins.  Her leadership on the Family Violence Coordinating Council has made it what it is today.  We all owe her a debt of gratitude for her dedication and hard work.”

Judge Collins stated, “It has been my great honor to serve as Chair of the 17th Circuit Court Family Violence Coordinating Council for the past 25 years, and I know Judge Clifford will do a great job continuing to raise awareness and improve the Court’s coordinated response to the issue of family violence.  Thank you for giving me the opportunity to do this!”

“I am honored to be appointed to replace Judge Collins as the chair of the 17th Judicial Circuit Family Violence Coordinating Council,” said Judge Clifford. “She has been a great mentor to me throughout my years as a prosecutor and as a judge. As we know, domestic violence has a tremendous impact on our community, and I am looking forward to the opportunity to add my voice to the many people who are working to address this issue.”

Judge Clifford has served as an associate judge since December 3, 2018.  She is currently assigned to the 17th Judicial Circuit Court’s Domestic Violence Coordinated Courts Division where she presides over felony and misdemeanor offenses. Prior to taking the bench, she served as an Assistant State’s Attorney in the Winnebago County State’s Attorney’s Office from 1998 to 2018. She received her undergraduate degree in Rhetoric and English from the University of Illinois in 1993, and her Juris Doctor from the University of Illinois in 1998.
