17th Circuit Selects John T. Gibbons as New Assocaite Judge Print E-mail

Marcia M. Meis, Director of the Administrative Office of Illinois Courts, and Eugene G. Doherty, Chief Judge of the Seventeenth Judicial Circuit Court, are pleased to announce that the 17th Circuit Judges have selected Attorney John T. Gibbons as an Associate Judge of the 17th Judicial Circuit.   This associate judge vacancy followed from the most recent general election in which Associate Judge John S. Lowry was elected to fill the vacancy of retired Circuit Judge J. Edward Prochaska.   Mr. Gibbons will take his oath of office on Friday, February 22, 2019.

Commenting on the selection, Chief Judge Eugene G. Doherty stated, “Our criminal court judges are familiar with Mr. Gibbons from the more than eight years he spent in the Winnebago County State’s Attorney's Office.  We know that he also impressed in McHenry County, where he rose quickly to become Chief of the Criminal Division.  We are excited to bring a talented native son back to our circuit."

“I am truly humbled by this appointment,” said Mr. Gibbons.  “As a lifelong resident of Winnebago County, I view our region as a place of truly vibrant people and places, remarkable ideas, and limitless potential. To serve this great community as an associate judge is an honor beyond words.”

Mr. Gibbons received his undergraduate degree in Political Science from Rockford College in 2001, and his Juris Doctor from Northern Illinois University College of Law in 2004.   He is currently an Assistant State’s Attorney in the McHenry County State’s Attorney’s Office where he holds the position of Chief of the Criminal Division.  His prior employment includes working as an Assistant State’s Attorney for the Winnebago County State’s Attorney’s Office and as an Assistant City Attorney for the City of Rockford Legal Department.

John Gibbons is a member of the Winnebago County Bar Association, the McHenry County Bar Association, and the Illinois Prosecutors Bar Association.  He is a past member of the Illinois Capital Litigation Trial Bar and was recognized as an Outstanding Illinois Prosecutor by the Alliance Against Intoxicated Motorists in 2016.  His involvement with community and civic organizations includes serving as a member of the Board of Education for Rockton School District 140.
