Court Receives Grant for Efficiency Study Print E-mail

The Winnebago County Circuit Court announced today that it received a $50,000 grant from the State Justice Institute to fund an efficiency study conducted by the National Center for State Courts.

"The 17th Circuit has been recognized statewide and beyond for its innovation and expertise," said Chief Judge Eugene Doherty, "but we are always interested in learning how we can do our job even better."

The study will focus on the Court's economic efficiency and update a process efficiency study conducted in 2012.  The team working with the Court includes experts in finance, business management, and court case-flow management.   Judge Doherty said that the subject matter expertise from the team at the National Center for State Courts is essential if the study is to produce useful recommendations.  "All across the country, courts have undertaken innovative techniques that have led to creating greater efficiency in court processes.  The National Center tracks these developments so that the lessons learned elsewhere might be shared with courts like ours.  There is no substitute for expertise in the judiciary; it is essential that we turn to experts who know the unique responsibilities of a court system.  We are lucky to have this kind of assistance."

The grant required the Court to match ten percent of the grant amount; the Court was able to accomplish this out of its existing budget and without asking for any additional funding from the County.

Results of the study are expected early in 2019 and will be made publically available.
