Attorney Stephen E. Balogh Selected as New Associate Judge Print E-mail

Michael J. Tardy, Director of the Administrative Office of Illinois Courts, and Joseph G. McGraw, Chief Judge of the Seventeenth Judicial Circuit Court, are pleased to announce that the 17th Circuit Judges voted to select local attorney Stephen E. Balogh as Associate Judge of the 17th Judicial Circuit.  This associate judge vacancy was created as result of the retirement of Associate Judge John R. Truitt.  Mr. Balogh will take his oath of office and start on Monday, November 7, 2016.


Commenting on the selection, Chief Judge Joseph G. McGraw states, “Mr. Balogh has 29 years of extensive trial experience before state and federal courts.  He is a respected attorney and a leader in our legal community and we look forward to his service as a judge within the Seventeenth Circuit Court.”


Mr. Balogh served in the United States Marine Corps from 1976 to 1982 where he attained the rank of Sergeant, E-5.  He received his undergraduate degree in Sociology, summa cum laude, from the University of Maryland in 1983, and a Juris Doctor, cum laude, in 1987 from the University of Illinois College of Law.


Mr. Balogh has been employed at the law firm of WilliamsMcCarthy, LLP since 1987. He is currently a partner in the firm’s litigation group where he has focused his practice in areas of civil rights, employment, labor and commercial litigation. He is a trained and experienced arbitrator, mediator and negotiator and has used his talent in these areas to represent clients in negotiating collective bargaining agreements.


Mr. Balogh is a member of the Winnebago County Bar Association, Illinois State Bar Association and the State Bar of Wisconsin.  He is a past president of both the Winnebago County Bar Association and the Winnebago County Bar Foundation.   He is a past chair of the Illinois State Bar Association Labor and Employment Law Section Council.  He is the current president of the P. Michael Mahoney Chapter of the Federal Bar Association.


In addition to leadership roles in non-profit organizations and numerous publications on legal matters, he has served as an arbitrator for the 17th Circuit Court’s Mandatory Arbitration Program and as a peer volunteer for the Illinois Lawyers' Assistance Program.  He has been peer reviewed by Martindale Hubbell with an AV Preeminent Rating, named as Illinois Super Lawyer by Thompson Reuters and named as an Illinois Leading Lawyer by the Law Bulletin Publishing Company.
