The Winnebago County Drug Court celebrated its twenty-fourth graduation ceremony on Tuesday, November 3, 2009.  Seventeen drug court participants attained the requirements necessary for graduation from the program, bringing the total number of Drug Court graduates to 398.  An hour long program was held to recognize these individuals and their achievements.

Drug Court is a specialized problem-solving court for non-violent offenders with a substance abuse addiction and a likelihood for rehabilitation.  This unique criminal justice program provides for increased judicial supervision and accountability of the participants while providing immediate access to substance abuse treatment.  Nationally drug court programs have been proven to lower recidivism among its participants, meaning fewer return trips to jail and prison providing a saving to taxpayers.  The benefits to the individuals recovering from substance abuse are immeasurable, including, but not limited to improving relationships with family, increased self-esteem, better health and increased likelihood for employment.  The ultimate goal is for the participant to take advantage of the program and use what they have learned to positively change the course of their life.

The Winnebago County Drug Court began in October 1996, and is a collaborative effort between the 17th Circuit Court, Winnebago County Adult Probation Department, Winnebago County State's Attorney's Office, Winnebago County Public Defender's Office, as well as substance abuse providers like T.A.S.C., Rosecrance, P.H.A.S.E. and Gateway.  Great appreciation must also go out to the Winnebago County Board for their continued support of our drug court program.  Thanks to all of those mentioned and many more who weren't.

 Treatment Works!  Drug Court Works!
